Helpful Homework Hints
Homework should not destroy family life. If homework is taking all evening, or creating major problems, please contact me.
The goal is to have children become independent with homework. You may have to support your child at the beginning of the year. Please try to move your child towards independence as the year progresses.
Kids tend to ask for help at the first sign of difficulty. We ask that students not receive any assistance until they have tried on their own for five minutes and have written evidence of effort (“five minute rule”).
In this way children can own their successes and learn to handle their setbacks. This builds authentic self-image and self-esteem.
First ask what they think. Initial help should be limited to redirecting your child to the directions and examples. Only then is more direct help appropriate. Although our goal is to create independent learners, your individual tutoring can be a great help. However, if your child needs help on a regular basis, please let me know.
Children with TVs, video games, or computers in their bedroom, where they do homework, often have trouble completing homework. Children often rush through homework to get to their TV or video game time.
Help schedule multi-night assignments. Encourage your child to add personal and family events to his or her monthly calendar
