Fourth Grade Math
October 2018
I am working with Ms. Ewell in collaborative math class. The current focus of my time in this class is developing problem solving strategies and mathematical communication. Students have written expectations/directions and receive written feedback to utilize as they tackle the next problem.
Because students have struggled to organize and manage materials, we have moved to a binder based organization system. The binder includes a homework sheet, a section for current work, and a reference section. The reference section provides directions and examples students will need / can use as they complete assignments.

Last week we completed two labs. First we computed how large a piece of window screen would have 1 million holes. Then we computed how long it would take to tap a pencil on the desk a trillion times. We practiced rounding numbers, comparing numbers, and started our investigation of fractions and decimals.
Your child should have shared a weekly letter with you.
We are continuing with Problems of the Week (POW's) and have added a weekly review item.
'Monday, October 16
Additional topics covered-
-Graphing; line, bar, and scatterplots
A Newsflash went home last week.
Watch for information coming home Monday ("Dear students")
We have started (almost) weekly problem solving challenges. These are assigned on Mondays and due on Fridays.
Math reference materials are in the right side of students' math folders or behind a "math reference" tab in their binder.
All students should have completed one unit on ST MATH so that I can assess how we might use it this year.
Friday, September 22
Additional Topics covered:
Place value multiplication
Traditional multiplication
Multiplication Clusters
Watch for information coming home Monday.
Watch for interims coming home Friday or next Monday.
Math reference materials will be updated this week. Students will have information/examples for all topics/procedures.
Friday, September 8
Topics covered to date:
Structure of number systems, base 10 and other bases
-Base 10, ten-thousandths to one-hundred billion
Multiplication
- Egyptian multiplication
-(more to come)
Students have taken their first quiz and performance was generally outstanding!
The first newsletter went home on Friday.

Quarter One 2017-2018: I am working with a small group of students developing mathematical concepts and problem solving.
During the 2016 - 2017 school year, I will be collaborating with Mrs. Carey to provide math instruction in 4th grade.
Focus areas will include: metacognition/student skills, problem solving, and conceptual learning
