Students have spent two weeks building an imaginary candidate for President. They presented policy statements on issues ranging from health care to military spending. Campaign posters will be uploaded next week.
Monday starts a two or three week unit: Election 2016. We will operate with one important rule. "You are not allowed to act like adults (in this election cycle)!"
Instead of comparing candidates, we are going to "build and candidate" from the ground up. The platform and policies will be student constructions. The book we will read requires parent permission. Forms will go home this week.
This week starts a new book club. We will meet four days a week for about 10 days. Students will get a chance to explore genres and topics they might not self-select.
In an effort to build in a bit more time for this group, the schedule has changed. Currently, a longer 5th grade math period takes the place of the "12:40 Club." In a few weeks, 5th grade math will trade that time back so that the 12:40 Club will have a longer class period.
The 5th grade team has created a student grouping to focus on metacognition and language arts. This cycle will likely continue until mid December.
