After a number of delays, the next group rotation starts on Monday February 1st. This rotation will focus on math problem solving.
Strategies/overcoming obstacles/communicating mathematically/perseverance The next rotation, with a different cohort of students will start this coming week. The focus will be math problem solving.
This group is meeting three days a week for 35 minutes.
We are developing strategies to independently tackle math problems and communicate mathematically. The second round of small group work starts Monday, November 9th. The team has made two working groups. Each group will meet for six days. This round will focus on preparing for the 3rd grade whole-school morning meeting. Students will be interviewing other students to find out what makes learning work here at MLES.
The second cycle of pull-outs starts this week. The team has divided the students into two groups. There will be about six sessions (MTW) with the first group followed by six session with the second group.
This cycle will focus on metacognition and math. Students have decided to try and make giant origami from bulletin board paper. Their first challenge will be figuring out how to cut it into perfect squares.
The have also told me that origami frogs are "impossible to make" (they tried last year and found them too difficult). I expect them to prove themselves wrong this week! Wednesday will be the last day for this rotation. The first rotation group has ended. During our time together we worked on reading comprehension including developing strong inferences, self-monitoring our learning, and (of course) origami.
Although we did not do any math this time, math was voted the most popular subject by an overwhelming margin. (see [email protected]) After six days with the next group, I will work with the team to develop the next plan. I have just begin meeting with a group of third grade students. We meet for about 40 minutes Monday - Wednesday. The first session will last for about six days.
Check back next week for an update about what we have been doing. |
